What is Modern Slavery / Exploitation?

Modern slavery and exploitation occur when a person is controlled, coerced, deceived or forced into work, services or activities for another person's benefit. This can include labour exploitation, criminal exploitation, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, human trafficking, financial abuse or situations where a person is unable to leave due to threats, intimidation, debt, abuse or manipulation.

Examples of Modern Slavery / Exploitation

  • Being forced to work with little or no pay
  • Having wages, bank accounts or identity documents controlled by someone else
  • Being threatened, intimidated or manipulated into working or carrying out activities
  • Human trafficking for labour, criminal or sexual exploitation
  • Being exploited to commit crimes, such as drug dealing or theft
  • Domestic servitude, where someone is controlled within a household
  • Financial abuse, including having money taken or controlled by another person
  • Being unable to leave a situation due to threats, debt, coercion or fear
  • Exploitation of vulnerable individuals for personal or financial gain
  • Situations where there are significant concerns about a person's welfare, safety or freedom
